The Island of Art, Sakushima

When looking for some peace and quiet, many head for the nearest art gallery. When you're looking for peace and quiet in Aichi, you may wish to head to one of the three small islands just off the prefecture's coast. The largest of the three and with a population of around 300 is Sakushima. Three times the size of Tokyo Disneyland, it is only 11.5km around the island, and 2km from one side to the other, and aside from the white sandy Ooura swimming beach and its refreshingly clear waters, the wide, unspoiled nature and tranquility, there isn’t much happening, which makes the picturesque Sakushima an ideal art gallery.

Sakushima Island

Since 2000, the island has undertaken a number of modern art projects of various size and scale all around the U-shaped island. Some of the art has to be seen to understood, and even then, seeing other pieces will still leave you wondering, such is art. For example, A staircase leads to the top of a large, white box-like structure which acts as a picture frame for the views from either side. Along a breakwater sit a flock of metal seagulls on stilts. Colorfully tiled benches for you to rest upon, statues and installations with ladders inviting you to climb, all manner of thought provoking art installations now dot the small island.

While you’re wandering the island, admiring the art, you may come across the islands 88 small shrines, maybe even the tree shrouded ancient tomb, said to be a thousand years old. The 300 residents of the island are mostly involved in catching fish and shellfish, including clams, oysters, octopus and sea cucumber, which means the freshest of seafood will be on hand at the islands café and restaurants.

New installations are continuously being set up. There’s peace, there’s quiet and there’s art, on the Island of Art, Sakushima.
