Okazaki-City Iwazu Tenmangu Shrine Plum Festival
(Iwazu Tenmangu Ume Matsuri)
Date : | From early February to mid-March |
Iwazu Tenmangu Shrine, or Iwazu Tenjin, is a shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, widely known in Japan as the Shinto kami god of scholarship. Due to this fact, the shrine is widely popular among students who visit it to pray for success in academic advancement. Especially in January, before the final exams that usually take place in mid-February, the streets around the whole town of Iwazu get crowded with great numbers of prayers. From February to late March, around 400 plum trees blossom all at once and paint the whole place with their soft pinkish hues.
