Nagakute-City 1st Nagakute Furusato Karuta Competition

Date : 01/18/2020

  • 1st Nagakute Furusato Karuta Competition

A Long Wait, a Quick Choice, a Win at Last!

The Nagakute Furusato Karuta Competition will be held on January 18th, 2020!
In 1999, the Nagakute City Chamber of Commerce and Industry called for phrases which were then turned into “Nagakute Furusato Karuta” by the Nagakute City Tourism Exchange Association.
Have the chance to talk and learn about Nagakute while playing a game of “karuta,” simultaneously conveying the best of Nagakute-City to children and bringing up old family stories.

Nagakute Karuta Cards

“Karuta” is a traditional Japanese card game based on the Japanese hiragana syllabary. Each card has one of the 46 basic characters written on it. The cards are spread out within reach of the players. A referee draws a card from another deck with a phrase written on it and reads it aloud. In the Nagakute version, the first syllable of the phrase corresponds to one of the cards on the floor. The first player to spot and touch the correct card wins the round. Play continues until no cards are left. This fast-paced game is an easy and fun way to practice your hiragana reading skills!
