During the warring states period, the Owari and Mikawa Provinces clamored for control of this strategic castle.

A tenshu tower reconstructed in concrete decorates the location of the ancient castle, and at the adjacent Iwasaki Castle Historical Museum, the history of the castle and Nisshin City as well as cultural heritage and discovered artifacts of the Ruins of Iwasaki Castle are exhibited.

Iwasaki Castle

Although the details are not known precisely, Iwasaki Castle is believed to have been built around the end of the Muromachi period. Iwasaki was a strategic point located on the road connecting Owari and Mikawa since ancient times. In 1529, the castle was taken over by Matsudaira Kiyoyasu (grandfather of Tokugawa Ieyasu) while it was being protected by Arakawa Yorimune (retainer of Oda Nobunaga's father, Nobuhide). Later on, the Niwa Ujikiyo moved to the castle from Hongo Castle in Nisshin City and the Niwa clan remained there as lords for four generations. During the Battle of Komaki and Nagakute in 1584 between Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Iyeyasu, the Niwa clan fought for the Tokugawa and were recognized for their allegiance, although they lost the castle in their attempt to halt the Hashiba forces' march from Inuyama to Okazaki. In 1987, a five-story pseudo donjon was built over the hommaru site, and the castle premises were made into Iwasaki Castle Park.

Access by public transport

•From Akaike Station of the subway Tsurumai Line (board from Fushimi Station, in turn reachable by subway Higashiyama Line from Nagoya Station), take the Meitetsu Bus bound for Nagakute Kosenjo Station (長久手古戦場駅 Nagakute Kosenjo Eki) and get off at Iwasaki Ontakeguchi (岩崎御岳口 300 yen, 19min ride). Walk 5min northeastwards, or;
•From Hoshigaoka Station of the Higashiyama Line (board from Nagoya Station), take the Meitetsu Bus bound for either Goshikien (五色園) or Toyota Automobile Museum (トヨタ博物館前 Toyota Hakubutsukan-mae) and get off at Iwasaki Ontakeguchi (岩崎御岳口 340 yen, 18-25min ride). Walk 5min northeastwards.
Access by car

•From downtown Nagoya City: Approx. 20min (6.1km) eastwards from Takabari Exit of the Nagoya Expressway R2 Higashiyama Route via routes 302, 217, and 57.
•From the Nagoya I.C. of the Tomei Expressway: approx. 20min (6.1km) southeastwards via routes 59, 219, 217, and 57.
