Watch the surface of the river light up with lanterns and fireworks

The Nishio Yonezu River Festival began as a prayer for the souls of those who have drowned and fallen in war and is held every year on August 15. This year, the festival rings in its 76th year, and as Buddhist sutras are read, some 1,500 lit lanterns reflect off the surface of the water before nearly 3,000 fireworks burst in the night sky, making for a romantic and surreal summer night.

Best spots to watch the event

Nearby spots: Exhilarating at close ranges!
• Both banks of the Yahagi River (along the embankment) to see the fireworks' launch site
• South side of the Yonezu Bridge, near the road and looking upstream, to watch the lanterns slowly float down the river

Slightly distanced spots: Enjoy the night view and fireworks!
• Mt. Yatsumen Observatory Tower
• Inariyama Tea Farm Park
• Area around Kamizuka Bridge

Note:
• Depending on the spot you choose, you may be able to relatively avoid congestion for a smooth return home.
• See the event's official site (Japanese) for details on purchasing floating lanterns in 2024.
