Cheers to Handa's Red Brick Building, the Old Kabuto Beer Brewery

An old red brick building with weather-battered outer walls that may even give the impression that it is abandoned. But in reality, it houses a museum, and is used as a charming venue for animated festivals and cultural events!

Handa Red Brick Building

Red brick buildings like this became fashionable in the early Meiji period (1868-1912) when Japan emerged from 250 years of feudal period self imposed isolation. In an effort to catch up with the rest of the world, it called in foreign experts to assist in its industrial, educational, military and trade redevelopment. Their influences included the red brick architecture of Europe, foreign styled fashions, factories and even beer. A century ago, there were four major beer brands in Japan, Dai Nippon, Kirin, Teikoku and the most popular, Kabuto! A Kabuto is a Samurai's helmet, and the beer that won the Alcoholic Beverages category Gold Medal at the Paris Expo of 1900!

This old red brick building was the home of Kabuto Beer! Originally constructed in 1887, the old brewery is designated a National Tangible Cultural Property, being the largest red brick building remaining from the Meiji Period. The five-story building produced the nationally popular brew until 1921, when the company closed. From then, the complex was used as a cornstarch factory, and even as a warehouse.
Parts of the brickworks feature bullet holes, reminders of the American P51 air raids of 1945. During the war, the Nakajima Aircraft Company’s manufacturing plant in Handa City used the old beer factory to store airplane parts, making it a target for allied attack.

Red Brick Revival

Handa Red Brick Building

In the late 1990's the building came under the administration of Handa City. The historical factory was restored and the popular beer revived, complete with old styled labels. Beer is no longer brewed in the old factory, so another local brewer has kept the suds coming, although in limited supply.

The former factory now operates as a restaurant and souvenir stall. Take the time to wander the grounds and view the old factory's Victorian architectural style and influences.
Kabuto Beer is still available at the restaurant and in many other restaurants, hotels and pubs in and around Handa. Order yourself a Kabuto when you visit Handa, and raise a glass to the Handa Red Brick building.
