Toyokawa-City Ko Summer Festival

Date : 07/26/2024 - 07/28/2024

A three-day festival with Japanese floats and fireworks!

The Ko Summer Festival is held for Ko Oyashiro Jinja Shrine and showcases the parade floats of four towns (Kami, Naka, Shimo, and Minami) during a stunning fireworks display coloring the night sky.
Of particular distinction is the Kabuki Parade, in which young men dressed in costumes straight out of the classic Taikoki and Chushingura stories parade around with a portable shrine. Participants in traditional white garb too accompany parade floats, just like out of an ancient picture scroll.
At night, tezutsu handheld cannon fireworks and large cannon fireworks top off this staple Toyokawa City summer festival.

Watch a famous Kabuki parade

One of the most well-known aspects of the Ko Summer Festival is its gorgeous Kabuki Parade.
Young men dress up as outlaw Ishikawa Goemon, the Shiranami Gonin Otoko bandits, Okaru and Kampei theatrical characters, warrior monk Benkei, and others in gorgeous costumes featuring fantastic gradation. When the men strike poses, the crowd erupts in applause with frantic screams!
However, the main spectacle of the parade is the procession of beautiful courtesans. Two short-haired young maidens walk before a gorgeous, high-ranking oiran courtesan with two attendants at each side for a total of five walking the street. When the oiran walks in a distinctively elegant way with her high geta footwear, the crowd again goes crazy.
