Formerly known as "Nagoya Airport" and home to huge numbers of international and domestic flights, when Chubu International Airport opened in 2005, many of the international routes disappeared, and it was officially renamed "Nagoya Airfield". These days, the airfield is a growing hub for commuter and business flights via small airplanes, and so even now it is still known as the "Prefectural Nagoya Airport". It is located right next to the Japan Air Self-Defense Force's Komaki Base with whom it shares the runway, so self-defense force aircraft can be seen taking off and touching down from the viewing decks. The former international terminal buildings have been brought back into use through remodeling into the "Airport Walk Nagoya" shopping mall with specialist shops and a movie theater.
