A Festival to Honor the Region's "Father of Pottery," Kato Shiro Zaemon

A literal translation of Seto Toso Festival would be "Festival of the Father of Pottery in Seto." This event has plenty of cultural events and sellers offering everything from food and amusement to reasonably priced pieces of fine pottery and much more.

Also included in the festival schedule are the religious ceremony and procession in honor of Kato Kagemasa, also known as Kato Shiro Zaemon, or simply "Toshiro." Legend has it that, by the beginning of the 12th century he settled in Mikawa after seeing that the soil there was good for earthenware, and built the first kiln, starting the pottery business in the area currently known as Seto. The place where he is believed to be enshrined, Suehiko Shrine (located within the premises of the larger Fukagawa Shrine), holds this unique festival each year.

The two-day event will have lots of attractions all around the city. Information for foreigners may be a bit scarce. Start by the market at the Parti Seto building right next to Owari-Seto Station (Meitetsu Seto Line), then to the Seto-Gura Museum just 150 meters east, and work your way to other locations.
