Higashiura-Town Omanto Festival (Omanto Matsuri) - Higashiura-Town
Date : | Mid-September to Late October |
A Great Festival of Man and Beast With Rituals for Good Fortune
The Higashiura-Town Omanto Festival is held on several different days in September and October, each weekend at a different shrine. Young and courageous men will try to run with the beautifully harnessed horses set free in the oval circuit enclosed by a wooden fence, inside the shrines’ grounds. This ritual is meant to bring good fortune to the local residents - as long as they can catch it as it rides the horses’ backs!
The event at the Muraki Shrine is the major one, with the largest number of horses being used. But the others are all worth checking out. This festival follows the tradition of horse festivals of other places in Aichi Prefecture, such as Takahama-City, Komaki-City and Nishio-City.
