A festival to honor a hero’s mother

Higashiura-Town every year holds the “Odai Festival” in honor to "Odai-no-Kata", mother of Hero Tokugawa Ieyasu and a natural of those parts. Events in the celebration involves a procession of about 2km by both margins of the Myotokuji River, known as the “Odai Stroll Pathway”, under the shadow of 400 trees of sakura planted along both embankments, all in full bloom by the time of the event.

The town of Higashiura, located at the eastern region of the isthmus of the Chita Peninsula, is a renowned place due to, among other things, the fact that hero Tokugawa Ieyasu’s mother was born there. “Odai-no-kata”, which roughly translates as “the person of Odai”, was a daughter of the Mizuno Clan which ruled the Chita District of Owari. At a very young age, she was married to Matsudaira Hirotada, in order to approximate the two families. Despite being called a “procession”, it is more like a parade, for there’s a fanfare band, with dancers, and a whole accompanying troupe. The sakura cherry blossoms are a particularly nice attraction of this cute event!
