No, Those Aren’t Cherry Blossoms, but Plum Tree Blossoms "Ume," a Different Kind of Beautiful!

Around Souri Pond in Chita-City is located the best plum grove in the whole prefecture, with approximately 6,000 trees representing 25 species, and a plum festival is held there from mid-February until mid-March, when the plum trees are in glorious bloom. During the festival period you can enjoy various events and delicious food stalls while gazing at the plum blossoms.

Enjoy the Gorgeous Blossoms of the Largest Plum Tree Grove in All of Aichi Prefecture!

Right before the celebrated sakura cherry blossoms begin around the country, you can see the plum tree blossoms everywhere. Easy to spot by their stronger colors, those blooming trees have a beauty of their own which, some argue, are more attractive than the pale sakura itself.

The most expansive orchard of plum trees in Aichi is the Souri Park, in the city of Chita, south of Nagoya. Decorated by 6,000 specimens of 25 varieties, this place becomes a wonderful sight starting in early spring. The trees are planted in a mixed fashion including early, mid and late bloomers, so you can enjoy a long flowering period of about a month. Like many other places, the city annually holds the Plum Festival, or "Ume Matsuri", but this one's vastness makes it the most impressive by far.

The plum trees at this place have a dramatic history. The Ise Bay Typhoon of 1959 affected it massively. Then, construction of a nearby dam inundated a great part of the original trees. The local residents, with help from the Aichi government, replanted and cared for lots of seedlings, thus returning the park to its current glory.
