Oasis 21, An Oasis in the Heart of Nagoya City

At first glance it appears that the Spaceship Enterprise from Star Trek has landed in Aichi Prefecture’s capital, Nagoya! However, it isn’t the Spaceship Enterprise, it’s the Spaceship Aqua, a 14m high glass and steel pipe architectural marvel supporting a shallow pool containing some 15 tons of water over the Oasis 21 venue, Nagoya’s popular sightseeing spot, shopping venue, eating location and event site.

Situated between Nagoya’s iconic Chubu Electric Power MIRAI TOWER (formerly Nagoya TV Tower), the huge NHK building and the Aichi Arts Center, Spaceship Aqua is just the upper level of Nagoya’s landmark Oasis 21 complex, a futuristic site accommodating over 30 specialty shops and restaurants surrounding the semi underground “Galaxy Platform” a popular events space located directly under the huge oval shaped dish above. At night, the Oasis 21 site is lit up in an ever-changing colorful light show, attracting photographers and romantic couples like moths to a flame.

Visitors can enjoy a walk around the outer edge of the Spaceship Aqua water dish, accessible by elevator or stairs, for a free panoramic view of Nagoya City central. Below, the Oasis 21 complex is connected to the vast network of the underground Central Park shopping boulevards under the Hisaya Odori park running north-south through the center of Nagoya City.

The “Field of Green” a tree filled grassy slope just behind the dish and in front of the NHK and Arts Centre buildings is popular with local office workers wanting to get out during their lunch breaks to soak up some sun.

Every August, the Oasis 21 complex becomes one of the main venues for the World Cosplay Summit, drawing many thousands of cosplayers, fans, camera buffs and onlookers to the spectacle.

The centrally located complex also serves as the Nagoya central bus terminal. Meitetsu, Sanko and the intercity long-distance Meitetsu and JR Tokai highway bus lines operate from the handy terminal, complete with a range of facilities to aid the traveler.

As the name suggests, the photogenic Oasis 21 is a popular sightseeing spot, shopping venue, eating location, event site and indeed, an Oasis in the heart of Nagoya City.
