Watch Parishioners and the Faithful Walk Among the Flames to Obtain the Blessings in a 540-years old festival!

The Akiba Great Festival of Fukugonji Temple is a fire festival with a history dating back over 540 years ago. Celebrated on the day that honors the Akiba Gongen "Kami" god of fire prevention, the rituals include prayers and rituals that honors that deity, with the most impressive among the procedures being the walk of parishioners and participating faithful among the bonfire flames. It is believed that the ritual will cleanse away bad fortune and bring good fortune for the next year, burning away the regrets and bad memories of the year that is ending. Every year the festival attracts thousands willing to take part in the ritual. Even children and senior citizens take part in it! Other attractions include "taiko" Japanese drum performances, gourmet booths, wood carving and DIY workshops, stage shows and much more.

-Hiwatari Bonfire Crossing from 5:00 PM
*: Subject to changes depending on the weather conditions.
*: In order to avoid overcrowding on the day, special prayers are by reservation only.
*: Hiwatari Bonfire Crossing expected to be crowded with participants. In case of overcrowding, admission to the temple premises may be restricted. Guests willing to participate in the Bonfire crossing walk are advised to show up early and get in line starting from midday.

Fee : Hiwatari Bonfire Crossing participation is free of charge, but a donation (offering) in currency is welcome (although not mandatory).

*: Guests are kindly requested to use public transportation as best as possible in order to help alleviate traffic congestion surrounding the temple.

Cautionary notes about the Hiwatari Bonfire Crossing : -Umbrellas are not allowed (in case it rains or snows).
-Toddlers, pregnant women and guests not enjoying good health conditions are not allowed.
-Guests wearing garment that is deemed too easily burned, as well as those wearing high heels, may not be allowed.
-If getting in line with friends or family, do not push , shove or do other acts that may lead to accidents, please wait your turn by standing still and meditating.
-Immediately before, during and after the crossing, do not stop to take pictures, selfies of make conversation around the area. Such acts may lead to tumult and congestion, so please move swiftly.
-Neither organizers nor temple management shall be held responsible for any kind of accident or happening during the procedures. All guests must participate under their own best judgement and responsibility.
-Avoid the crowds by showing up early and getting in line during the day.
-Proper attire is the recommended manner for guests wishing to receive prayers and blessings.

    From Kasugai Station of the JR Chuo Main Line, either:
    -Take the Aoi Kotsu Bus (あおい交通バス) bound for Tokadai (桃花台) and get off at Fukugonji-mae (福厳寺前), then walk westwards 5 min., or;
    -Take the Meitetsu Bus (名鉄バス) bound for Tokaidai Higashi (桃花台東) and get off at Shiroyama Yon-chome (城山4丁目), then walk southwards 15 min.
