A 540-year-old festival of flames

Fukugonji Temple's Great Akiba Festival is over 540 years old and relates to the passing of Akiha Sanshakubo Daigongen, the god of fire prevention. Participants cleanse their minds and bodies through a firewalking ritual as they reflect on the past year and pray for an even better one. Each year, thousands of worshippers take part in the firewalking ritual, walking through the flames no matter their gender or age. The act burns away any impurity or bad luck, letting them be reborn as they meet another year.
