An epic festival during which splendiferous floats plunge into the sea

Appointed Gamagori City Intangible Cultural Folk Heritage, this utterly famous festival is over three centuries old and every year gathers tens of thousands of visitors in the picturesque Miya Onsen Resort Area of Gamagori-City.

Miya Festival (Miya Matsuri)

On a Saturday and Sunday at the end of October, four giant, beautiful floats called "yama" parade between Yatsurugi Shrine and Wakamiya Shrine in Gamagori City, vigorously pulled by a large crowd of men, called "ujiko." During the "Kaichu Togyo" which takes place along the way, onlookers are captivated by the sight of the splendiferous floats plunging into the sea and pressing on for 300 meters.

    From Mikawa Miya Station of the JR Tokaido Main Line (board from either Nagoya Station or Toyohashi Station), take the temporary, free of charge shuttle bus operating during the festival (Yatsurugi Shrine: 3min southwards walk from Mikawa Miya Station).
