Toyokawa-City [Only Shrine Rituals Held]
Amagoi Festival (Amagoi Matsuri)

Date : 08/20/2022, 08/21/2022

  • Amagoi Festival (Amagoi Matsuri)

Only shrine rituals to be held for the 2022 Amagoi Festival (not open to the general public).

A Gorgeous Kabuki Procession Around the Streets of Old Akasaka-Juku!

The Amagoi Festival (雨乞いまつり Amagoi Matsuri) is held annually in the city of Toyokawa where devotees pray for rain, and takes place amidst the streets of the Akasaka District. The event has over 300 years of history, and its highlight is the gorgeous Kabuki Procession (歌舞伎行列 Kabuki Gyoretsu), graced by actresses and actors playing the roles of Oiran, Samurai, Warriors and other famous figures, with the background music of the "hayashi" band.

Akasaka-Juku is famous since centuries ago, as it was the 36th "juku" inn along the Old Tokaido Route. Some of the old-style buildings depict the look and feel of Edo Period's cities, so this event is a great chance to experience an old Japanese tradition. The old Tokaido Route passing by that location is currently known as Aichi Prefectural Route 374, and the parade takes place in the area near to the Meiden Akasaka Station of the Meitetsu Nagoya Main Line.
