Gorgeous Hana-Shobu Irises

The iris is a flower highly appreciated in Japan, so when the iris shrubs in parks and gardens start to bloom, festivals are held across the whole country in order to celebrate them. The city of Ichinomiya, to the west of Nagoya, has a green area within which the "Man'yo Koen" and "Takamatsu Bun-en" Annex parks yearly exhibit their beautiful iris gardens, and right now is the perfect timing to go see them. An excess of 1,700 irises of 38 variations decorate the whole place with their delicate colors.

The park has countless stone monuments onto which poems and proses have been carved. This has to do with the origin of the park's name, "Man'yo," derived from the famous compilation of ancient Japanese poems, the "Man'yo-shu" (The Anthology of Myriad Leaves). Since this area is known for the occurrence of the "hagi" (Lespedeza) plant believed as having been inspiration for a number of those poems, the word "Man'yo" (albeit with different kanji characters) was chosen to baptize this place. The relation with these particular "hagi" is unknown, so we'll leave it to your imagination.

Usually in June's first weekend on Saturday & Sunday the park sees the Iris Flower Festival ("Hana-shobu Matsuri"), with shows, tea parties and cultural events. Miss Tanabata and Miss Drapery, the gorgeous ladies chosen to represent this friendly city, eventually grace the event too!
