The fantastic lantern boat "Horoku" and fireworks festival

A traditional summer festival with history dating back over 250 years ago, held yearly at famous Himakajima Island, the main attractions of the Gion Festival are the rituals with the Horoku boat decorated with countless "Kento" votive lanterns and the amazing fireworks display - a show of lights made the more impressive due to the absence of nearby artificial illumination, as it is, of course, in the middle of the sea. At the climax of the ceremonies, the youngsters dressed in ritualistic loincloths lighting all the lanterns collected from the households and floating them on the sea makes for another spectacular sight.
