A fireworks festival that proudly boasts the biggest shell among all the Pacific Rim countries!

Held annually on the last weekend of July, the Gamagori Festival is a city-wide event that starts on Saturday with "Yosakoi" street dances (with Naruko clappers), Tug of War tournaments, food tents, dance contests for kids, and various other attractions carried out simultaneously at several places around the city's coastal area, from the Gamagori Station building to the Natural History Museum "Sea of Life" and the Gamagori Public Hall.

The multiple events continue throughout the day on Sunday, and at night the climax of the festival comes with the Gamagori Noryo Fireworks Festival. The word "noryo" means "refreshing after the heat," which is fitting for the twilight time when the fireworks start.

Gamagori Festival & Gamagori Noryo Fireworks (Gamagori Matsuri - Gamagori Noryo Hanabi Taikai)

This display of fire flowers is special because it boasts the largest explosive round in the entire Pacific Rim, an astounding 90 cm-diameter shell weighing around 300 kg, shot from a special mortar installed on a barge floating nearby in the coast which creates a huge shining star over 640 meters of diameter. Usually, three of those impressive rounds are shot at the peak of the event, and the tens of thousands of awed spectators instantly know when they are launched from the sheer shock wave impact of both cannon and round explosions. The flash lights up the whole Gamagori coast and its famous landmark, Takeshima Island, and together with the background music played along, adds to the show's unforgettable magnificence.

Upon deciding to go witness this wonderful event, make sure to check the best watching spots: either from the sea-side grass fields of the Gamagori Public Hall, or near the Gamagori Classic Hotel, both a short walk from Gamagori Station. There you'll enjoy the food and game tents, and the dense crowd of all kinds of people, with a large number of them wearing the traditional light kimono for Summer, the charming "yukata." Or, if you'd rather not get mixed in the crowd and will be satisfied in watching the pyrotechnic display from afar, there’s the Toyooka-ko Park (Toyooka-ko Koen), about 4.5 km from the event, but high on a plateau that will provide a direct view of the coast and shooting fireworks, as well as a wonderful night view of Gamagori City. Wide grassy areas allow you to sit comfortably and in relative peace. There is also a fun park for kids, toilets, and maybe some food stalls, in addition to parking for 33 cars. However, regardless of your location of choice, make sure to show up early because these places are avidly sought-after by everyone, and good spots run out quickly.

Needless to say, besides the above mentioned mega-explosive, there’s the incredible show of regular-sized fireworks lit in an amazing pyrotechnic fantasy of lights and sound, an experience sure to make for an everlasting memory of your stay in Aichi.
