Himakajima Island: The Octopus’s Garden

If you're a Beatles fan, you'll know the song Octopus' Garden. It could well be that the Beatles were singing about Himakajima Island: one of three small islands off the coast of Aichi and the closest island to Nagoya via a 10-minute high-speed boat ride from Morozaki Port. As you may have already guessed Himakajima is famous for its octopus as well as Japanese puffer fishing.
But octopus is easily the star of this island, and octopus cuisine is rampant across the island's eateries. From October to March, the Japanese pufferfish comes into season and is an exquisite delicacy. The seafood culture is so abundant that octopi and blowfish are strewn about the port with a sign reading, "Welcome to the island of fortune and luck!"

Lovers' Swing

Cuisine is of course one of the aspects drawing in many visitors but fishing from embankments and breakwaters too is one of the island's enjoyable activities.
Or get your fill of swimming during summer at the island's beautiful beach. Sunrise Beach, on the east side of the island, is aptly named for its beautiful view of the rising sun as is Sunset Beach on the westside for its colorful sunsets.
Climb the stairs from Sunset Beach's Kids Adventure to Lovers’ Swing, a log swing offering an incredible view of the ocean with the invigorating sensation of swinging into the clear blue sky.
